VINEYARD: The Ricetti Vineyard in Mendocino is located on the eastern bench of Redwood Valley. Tom Ricetti’s father originally cleared the land with dynamite and a horse. It was planted in the 1960s and is dry-farmed and organic.

WINEMAKING: The grapes were harvested at 22 brix and fermented whole-cluster with no punchdowns or pump overs for 7 days. The grapes were sealed in a container as they began to ferment. It was pressed to stainless steel at 10 brix where it finished fermentation. The wine was barreled down and aged on the lees for 6 months in barrel before bottling. We produced 3 barrels. The goal here was to create a light, fun style of red wine that acts a bit like a rosé, but with more weight.

TASTING NOTES: Bing cherry. Cranberry. Rose hip.

WHAT’S IN A NAME? This wine is all about juiciness with a bit of a brambly edge. The semi-carbonic handling makes this wine taste fresh, approachable, and focused. Best served cool. For that reason we named it after one of our favorite Seijun Suzuki films: Youth of the Beast. A boldly stylized Japanese gangster flick from the mid 60s that’s flashy and unpredictable.
